How to read it
The Hong Kong Observatory documents that traditional hours, called shichen, were named by the twelve Earthly Branches. Its modern-time table runs from Zi at 23:00–01:00 through Hai at 21:00–23:00. This twelve-part time system is the factual basis behind the popular birth-hour animal lookup.
The familiar animals correspond to the same twelve branches: Rat for Zi, Ox for Chou, Tiger for Yin, Rabbit for Mao, Dragon for Chen, Snake for Si, Horse for Wu, Goat for Wei, Monkey for Shen, Rooster for You, Dog for Xu, and Pig for Hai. Calling that result a Chinese rising sign is convenient search language, but the underlying coordinate is a branch of the birth hour.
A Western ascendant is calculated differently. It is the point where the ecliptic meets the eastern horizon for an exact time and geographic place; the twelve signs do not simply occupy fixed two-hour clock blocks. The Chinese hour animal therefore should not be presented as an astronomical ascendant or converted into one.
State the time basis before using the table. A civil clock record, historical time zone, daylight-saving rule, longitude correction, and the chart method's treatment of true solar time can place a birth on different sides of a two-hour boundary. A birth comfortably inside one period is straightforward; a time near a boundary should retain the uncertainty.

Example
If the declared time basis places a birth at 06:40, it falls in Mao, the Rabbit period. That identifies the birth-hour branch and animal; it does not create a Western Rabbit ascendant. If correction moves the time close to 07:00, compare the Mao and Chen boundaries instead of hiding the uncertainty.
