Agreement can support a casting rule, but no single witness proves an unbroken lineage, complete authorship, or identity with modern Zi Wei systems.

A textual witness is a surviving copy, edition, image, or transcription through which a work can be read. The Xu Daozang witness is treated as evidence for wording and rule structure, not as proof that every later practice came from one unchanged system.
The Wikisource pages make the Xu Daozang text readable online. Chinese Text Project offers a separate electronic witness that can reveal differences or OCR errors. The later printed edition helps identify eighteen-star terminology and variant passages, but its publication date and editorial form must remain distinct from the older witness.

Example
If one transcription gives an unclear starting branch for Three Platforms, the rule is not chosen from familiarity. The page image, another transcription, worked examples, hand calculation, and automated result are compared; the adopted reading and remaining uncertainty are then recorded together.
Common misunderstandings
- A text appearing in a Daoist collection does not prove that every modern Zi Wei Dou Shu method uses the same algorithm.
- An OCR transcription is a research aid, not an infallible replacement for the page image.

Questions people ask
Does the Xu Daozang text prove that Chen Tuan wrote the surviving edition?
No. Traditional attribution can be recorded, but the surviving witness alone does not establish direct authorship.
Why use more than one electronic source?
Independent witnesses help expose damaged characters, OCR mistakes, omitted lines, and editorial differences before a rule is implemented.
