Direct answer

A Chinese zodiac animal cannot always be identified from the four-digit birth year alone. Enter the exact Gregorian birth date in the calculator: it converts the date to the corresponding Chinese lunar year and uses Lunar New Year as the public annual-animal boundary. This is a cultural calendar lookup, not a personality test. Destin Field's separate twelve-palace chart uses Li Chun for its birth-year stem and branch, so the two labels can differ for some early-February births.

How to read it

The public zodiac result comes from the Earthly Branch of the Chinese lunar year. Rat through Pig repeat every twelve years, while the complete Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch name repeats every sixty years. The calculator therefore displays both the animal and the two-character stem-branch year instead of reducing the result to an animal icon.

January and February require the complete date because Lunar New Year moves from year to year. A person born before that boundary remains in the preceding lunar year under this public convention. The tool finds the boundary for the selected Gregorian year and states which side of it the date occupies.

The annual element comes from the Heavenly Stem, not from the animal alone. Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water each cover two consecutive stems. This is an annual calendar label and is not a complete Five Elements balance, BaZi chart, or Zi Wei Dou Shu reading.

Some chart methods change the year at Li Chun rather than Lunar New Year. Destin Field uses the exact Li Chun moment for the birth-year stem and branch in its Ancient Eighteen Flying Stars chart. A lookup result and a chart result can therefore differ without either having used January 1 or a blended cusp.

The calculator runs in the browser and does not send or save the entered date. For a full twelve-palace chart, use the recorded local date, birth time, birthplace, historical time zone, and the chart's documented time-handling rules.

Five checks behind the calculator result

1. Enter the recorded date

Use the complete Gregorian date on the birth record rather than only the year or a date converted by hand.

2. Resolve Lunar New Year

The public annual animal remains in the preceding lunar year until the dated Lunar New Year boundary.

3. Read the branch animal

The Earthly Branch supplies the annual animal in the fixed Rat-to-Pig cycle.

4. Read the stem element

The Heavenly Stem supplies the annual Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water label.

5. Keep method boundaries visible

A Li-Chun-based twelve-palace chart is a separate calculation and can change earlier than the public zodiac lookup.

Example

For 16 February 2026, the public Lunar-New-Year convention still returns the Yi-si Snake year because the 2026 Lunar New Year begins on 17 February. Entering 17 February changes the result to Bing-wu, the Fire Horse year. A Li-Chun-based chart has a separate earlier boundary.

Common misunderstandings

  • The Chinese zodiac year does not always begin on 1 January.
  • A boundary date does not create a mixed or cusp animal.
  • An annual animal and element do not establish personality, compatibility, health, wealth, luck, or future events.

Reading boundary

This calculator provides a cultural calendar label. It does not provide a horoscope, personality measurement, compatibility score, health or financial advice, or a guaranteed prediction.

Questions people ask

What is my Chinese zodiac sign by birth date?

Enter the complete Gregorian birth date. The calculator uses the corresponding lunar year and its Earthly Branch animal under the public Lunar New Year convention.

Why does my Chinese zodiac differ from my birth year?

If the birth date falls before Lunar New Year, the public animal remains in the preceding lunar year. A source using Li Chun can also change at a different boundary.

Does the calculator include the Chinese zodiac element?

Yes. It shows the annual element associated with the Heavenly Stem, while making clear that this is not a complete Five Elements analysis.

Is the date uploaded or saved?

No. The lookup is calculated in the current browser and does not send or store the entered date.

Is this the same as a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart?

No. The calculator returns a public annual calendar label. The Destin Field chart uses birth date, time, place, Li Chun, lunar conversion, stars, and twelve palaces.
