How to read it

The twelve animals follow the fixed Earthly Branch order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Their stable shared function is calendrical. Personality descriptions were added through folklore, popular writing, family teaching, festivals, and modern horoscope culture, so wording can differ across regions and sources.

The list below gives a balanced reading for each animal. A strength names a quality commonly praised in popular descriptions; the challenge names how the same tendency can become less useful when overextended. Neither side is a diagnosis. One person may recognize several prompts, reject others, or express them differently across work, family, friendship, and changing life stages.

Before reading a sign, confirm the calendar label. A four-digit Gregorian year is only a first lookup because traditional years do not universally change on January 1. Many public zodiac lists use Lunar New Year, while some named chart methods use Li Chun. Exact-date tools should state their boundary rather than silently assigning every January birth to the new Gregorian year.

Do not turn broad traits into compatibility or ability scores. Calling the Ox steady does not prove that every Ox-year person is patient; calling the Horse independent does not prove that a Horse-year person avoids commitment. A useful reading compares a description with observed choices, circumstances, and feedback rather than forcing the person to fit the label.

A birth-year animal is also much narrower than a full Four Pillars or Zi Wei Dou Shu calculation. Other systems may use month, day, hour, stems, palaces, stars, and timing cycles.
